scale model figures is a popular hobby. They are available in
plastic, resin, and some, a few, are multi media kits.
scale is somewhat popular with military subjects. Not just from
a military standpoint - many are historical in nature.
today other genres are branching out into this scale. Mainly anime
and manga figures, as well as "real life" figure kits.
Bandai with their very popular Star Wars figures have embraeced
the 1/12 scale and have produced many kits, all of this same size.

just a bit bigger size than 1/16 (another popular scale) so detailing
and painting them is a little bit easier. Plus it allows companies
to produce more subjects matter where the other scale might seem
1/12 kit can be a full figure, head to toe, or a bust (showing,
usually, from the waist up).
the 1950s and 1960s there were some competing scales, such as
1/10, and 1/13, among others. But the 1/12 scale has steadily
become the "standard" if you will, for most models kits
that fit within the subject (and price) range.
interesting thing about 1/12 kits that you never know what the
subject will be. It's such a diverse scale. So there's always
something that will catch your eye if you build figure kits.
